'Twas the fight before Christmas in British city centres last night, as Black Eye Friday celebrations descended into a dangerous mix of drunkenness and violence.
Rowdy revellers were pictured scuffling, urinating and collapsing on the street in cities including Newcastle, Cardiff, Liverpool, Swansea, Manchester and London, on the last Friday before Christmas.
Dubbed Black Eye Friday or Mad Friday, the night is typically when workers go out to celebrate the start of their holidays with colleagues, safe in the knowledge that they have the entire weekend in which to recover.
But the celebrations took a dark turn in Yorkshire, where an officer was left with a gaping wound on his head after he and two colleagues were set upon - leading to condemnation from police chiefs.
Tweeting from hospital with two injured colleagues, Sgt Alex Artis wrote: 'Mad Friday is living up to its name sadly. Three of my officers assaulted in last two hours.'
